Secure pallets come down to five things: a stable stack, base wraps that lock the load to the pallet, an overlapping up-and-down spiral, enough containment force to make the load one unit, and pre-stretched film. Build square, anchor the bottom, wrap consistently to the top, reinforce the top, and match the film to the load. No amount of film fixes a bad stack. Start with a pallet in good condition, no broken boards or protruding nails. Stack boxes squarely, keep the load within the pallet footprint (no overhang), and put heavier items on the bottom. Column-stacking holds weight best; interlocking adds side-to-side stability. A square, dense load is far easier to contain than a leaning or pyramid-shaped one.
The single most important wraps are at the bottom. Start low and put several revolutions around the base of the load and the top deck of the pallet so the film ties the two together. This anchor keeps the load from sliding off the pallet during handling and transit. On a machine, set the film to wrap the bottom wraps before spiraling up.
From the anchored base, spiral the film upward with each pass overlapping the last by roughly half its width, so there are no uncovered gaps. Carry the film to the top of the load, add reinforcing wraps at the top, then spiral back down. This up-and-down pattern doubles coverage and ties the whole load together. Overlap is what turns individual bands of film into a continuous, load-holding sleeve.
Containment force is how tightly the film squeezes the load, a mix of film tension and how many layers you apply. Too little and the load leans or shifts; too much can crush product or break the film. Aim for enough force that the wrapped load feels like one solid unit and does not flex when nudged. Pre-stretch is where efficiency lives. A powered pre-stretch system on a machine stretches the film before it reaches the load, often up to around 250%, so one roll covers far more pallets while still holding tension. Match film gauge and grade to the load. Heavy, tall, or sharp loads need higher gauge or a puncture-resistant film; light, uniform loads can run thinner. The whole point is loads that arrive the way they left. Beyond the wrap itself: use corner boards on sharp or fragile edges to protect the film and the product, apply enough top reinforcement so the load does not shift under vibration, and keep containment force consistent so no single pallet is the weak one.
