What is stretch wrap?

Stretch wrap, also called stretch film or pallet wrap, is a highly elastic plastic film. It is pulled taut and wrapped around a load, most often a palletized load, so the film's tension squeezes the items together into one stable unit. The film's natural cling keeps the layers stuck to each other. There is no heat involved at any point. A stretch wrap machine applies the film consistently, controlling how tightly the load is held, which is called containment force.

What is shrink wrap?

Shrink wrap is a different plastic film that behaves the opposite way. It is placed loosely over or around a product, then heat is applied with a heat gun or a heat tunnel. The heat causes the film to shrink and conform tightly to the shape of whatever it covers, creating a sealed, snug enclosure. Because it seals fully, shrink wrap can protect against dust and moisture, which is why it is common for retail packaging, bundling multipacks, and full pallet covers.

When to use stretch wrap

Reach for stretch wrap whenever the goal is to hold a load together for storage or transit, especially palletized freight. It is the workhorse of the warehouse for good reason:

  • Pallet unitizing, the most common job by far. Boxes, bags, drums, and mixed loads all wrap fast.
  • High volume, a machine wraps pallets in seconds with consistent tension.
  • Low cost per load, no heat, less energy, and powered pre-stretch stretches each roll further.
  • Load stability, containment force keeps loads from leaning or shifting.
